Workshop 3: Collaborative Storytelling & Social Writing

Introduction: A group storytelling workshop where seniors co-create a story or write letters to each other. For example, one person starts a story sentence, the next continues, creating a collective narrative (similar to the TimeSlips method). Alternatively, pairs write letters of appreciation to family or friends. Storytelling in any form fosters social connection and gives voice to life experiencesgenerations.asaging.orggenerations.asaging.org.

Goals: Build communication skills, strengthen peer bonds, and practice narrative structure in a social context.

Structure & Duration: 1 hour. Arrange chairs in a circle. Begin with an icebreaker (“Name one favorite book or movie”). Explain activity format (story-building or letter-writing). Give an example (e.g. one line story based on a photo or theme). Proceed in rounds.

    • Methodology:

      Methodology:

      • Round-Robin Story: Facilitator suggests a first line (e.g. “Once there was a small boat on a big ocean…”). Each person adds a sentence, building the plot. Write down the story on a shared board or paper. This engages imagination and listening skills.
      • Letter Exchange: Partners spend 10 minutes writing a kind letter to each other (e.g. “I appreciate when you…”). Letters are then read aloud. This encourages emotional expression and empathy.
      • Visual Prompts: Use photographs or art prints as story prompts to spark creativity.

      • Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes: Participants practice coherent storytelling and attentive listening. The act of creating a narrative together is reported to reduce loneliness and foster empathygenerations.asaging.org. Writing supportive letters enhances positive social ties. This collaborative creativity boosts confidence and a sense of belonging.

        • Evaluation

Evaluation: Monitor group dynamics (frequency of contributions, smiling, nodding). Use short questionnaires on social connectedness before/after the workshop. Evaluate the story’s coherence and richness (as a fun measure of creativity). Participants can share verbally how the group activity felt, highlighting any surprise or joy from co-creating.
